modern: -adjective pertaining to,
or characteristic of contemporary styles of art, literature, music,
etc., that reject traditionally accepted or sanctioned forms and
emphasize individual experimentation and sensibility. (dictionary.com)
This is not a late-works-by-Liszt-CD. "Modern" qualifies the works of
Liszt as of few other composers. The selection presented on this
recording encompasses a relatively large period of the creative life of
Liszt. The two "Légendes", composed between 1863-65, together with the
Fantasy and Fugue on B.A.C.H (composed for organ in 1855, revised 1870)
are the earliest, the two Csárdás, 1882, and the "Bagatelle sans
tonalité", 1885, are the latest pieces. However, missing the obvious
modern qualities in Liszt's earlier works, like the Etudes, even the
Paganini ones, would be a sizable mistake. The complete musical
vocabulary, which will later emancipate the tonal boundaries, is
characteristic. The use of the whole-tone scales and symmetrical chord
formations in the Dante Sonata, the tonal ambiguities of the diminished
seventh chords will inevitably lead to the Bagatelle without tonality.
